Apple was the world’s most valuable listed company at the end of 2021.
Apple finished 2021 as the leading publicly traded company by market capitalization, ahead of other technology giants and Saudi Aramco. Its position reflected strong investor demand for the iPhone, Mac, iPad, wearables, and rapidly expanding services business.
The ranking was close and changed during the year. Microsoft briefly overtook Apple at points in 2021 as share prices moved, but Apple regained the lead by year-end. This illustrates why “world’s richest company” is usually shorthand for the company with the largest market capitalization, not the greatest annual profit or the most cash.
Apple’s valuation also benefited from its brand strength and integrated ecosystem. Customers who use several Apple products may be more likely to remain within the company’s platform, supporting repeat hardware purchases and recurring services revenue. Still, market leadership remains dependent on daily trading prices.
