Microsoft crossed a $1 trillion market capitalization in April 2019, becoming the third U.S. company to do so.
Microsoft reached the milestone on April 25, 2019, after reporting strong results and benefiting from investor confidence in its cloud strategy. The company had shifted substantially from its earlier dependence on Windows and packaged software toward cloud services, enterprise software, subscriptions, gaming, and professional networking.
Azure cloud computing became a central part of this transformation, while Microsoft 365 replaced many one-time software purchases with recurring subscriptions. Satya Nadella, who became chief executive in 2014, emphasized this cloud-first direction.
Market capitalization reflects the value investors assign to all publicly traded shares. It should not be confused with Microsoft’s annual revenue or its valuation in a private funding round. The company’s position among the world’s largest firms has changed repeatedly as technology shares and broader markets have risen or fallen.
