TSMC’s 2024 market capitalization made it the largest publicly traded company headquartered in Taiwan.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, became Taiwan’s market-cap leader as demand for advanced chips used in artificial intelligence, smartphones, and high-performance computing accelerated. Its valuation changes daily with its share price and the number of shares outstanding.
TSMC is primarily a contract chip manufacturer, or foundry. Instead of selling many chips under its own consumer brand, it manufactures designs created by companies such as Nvidia, Apple, and AMD. This business model makes TSMC a crucial link in the global semiconductor supply chain.
TSMC was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang. It operates major fabrication facilities in Taiwan and has expanded overseas, including a prominent investment in semiconductor manufacturing in Arizona. It is not the same company as Nvidia, whose chips TSMC often manufactures.
