Apple was the first United States company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2018.
Apple crossed the mark on August 2, 2018, during trading on the Nasdaq. The milestone followed years of growth built around the iPhone, which had become the company’s central product after its 2007 launch. Apple also expanded its business through Macs, iPads, wearables, and services.
The phrase “market capitalization” refers to the value of all outstanding shares at the current share price. It does not mean Apple held $1 trillion in cash, nor does it describe annual turnover. A company’s market cap can rise or fall without a corresponding immediate change in its physical assets.
Apple’s achievement was followed by other U.S. technology companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet. The milestone is distinct from the later $1 trillion debut achieved by Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia.
