Tesla became the first publicly traded automobile manufacturer to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla crossed the milestone after its share price surged following news that Hertz planned to order 100,000 electric vehicles. The valuation reflected expectations for rapid electric-vehicle adoption, Tesla’s production growth, and possible future businesses such as software and energy storage.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and delivered its first production car, the Roadster, in 2008. The Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y broadened its lineup, with the Model 3 and Model Y becoming especially important to volume sales.
Market capitalization measures investor expectations as well as current earnings. Tesla’s valuation therefore cannot be interpreted simply as the value of the cars already produced. It also reflects anticipated growth, margins, technology, and competition in the electric-vehicle market.
