Phones 4u was founded by John Caudwell, the entrepreneur who appeared as a Dragon on Dragons' Den.
Caudwell built his early business success in the mobile-phone trade. Along with his brother Brian, he developed a telecommunications retail operation that became Phones 4u, a major British mobile-phone retailer and distributor.
He appeared as a Dragon in the programme's early history, bringing experience from a rapidly expanding consumer-technology market. Mobile phones were becoming mainstream in Britain during the period when the company grew, creating a large market for handsets, contracts and accessories.
Phones 4u is often confused with Carphone Warehouse because both became prominent British mobile-phone retailers. They were separate businesses. Phones 4u entered administration and closed its stores in 2014, while Carphone Warehouse followed a different corporate history.
