Dragon's Den investor Alan Sugar founded the consumer-electronics company Amstrad.
Sugar established Amstrad in 1968; the name came from Alan Michael Sugar Trading. The company initially sold affordable hi-fi equipment and later expanded into computers, including the Amstrad CPC range launched in the 1980s.
Amstrad became one of Britain's most recognisable technology companies. Its products included home computers, satellite television equipment and other consumer electronics. Sugar later became chairman of Tottenham Hotspur and joined Dragon's Den as an investor.
Amstrad should not be confused with the businesses founded by other Dragons. In particular, Ryman is associated with Theo Paphitis, while Phones International Group was founded by Peter Jones.
