Which company supplies the tires for Formula 1?
Answer
Pirelli
Answer
Pirelli
Pirelli supplies the tyres for Formula 1 as the championship’s exclusive tyre supplier.
The Italian company returned to Formula 1 as the sole supplier in 2011, replacing Bridgestone. Rather than allowing teams to choose between competing manufacturers, the single-supplier system gives every team access to the same basic tyre technology. This places greater emphasis on car design, setup, strategy and how effectively each team manages tyre wear.
Pirelli supplies several dry-weather compounds, identified by colours such as hard, medium and soft, as well as intermediate and wet tyres for rain. The compounds are selected for each circuit because track surfaces, temperatures and cornering loads vary dramatically from one Grand Prix venue to another.
Pirelli has a long history in motorsport: the company was founded in Milan in 1872 and first appeared in Formula 1 during the championship’s early years. Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin have all supplied F1 tyres in other eras, which explains why they sometimes appear in historical trivia. Pirelli’s current agreement runs through the 2028 season.
