Alphabet owns the Google search engine and joined the trillion-dollar market-capitalization club in 2020.
Alphabet reached a market value of at least $1 trillion in January 2020. The holding company was created in 2015 as part of a corporate restructuring that placed Google and several other businesses under Alphabet’s umbrella.
Google remains Alphabet’s largest business, generating most of its revenue through advertising across Search, YouTube, and partner websites. Alphabet also includes businesses and projects such as Google Cloud, Waymo, and other “Other Bets,” though their scale differs greatly from Google’s core operations.
A frequent mistake is using Google as the listed company’s official name. Google is the principal subsidiary and consumer brand, while Alphabet Inc. is the parent corporation whose shares trade publicly.
