Alphabet is the parent company that owns Google and its search engine through Google LLC.
Alphabet was created in 2015 as part of a corporate restructuring that separated Google’s core internet products from several other businesses and projects. Google became a subsidiary of Alphabet, while Sundar Pichai became Google’s chief executive and Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive.
The structure allowed businesses such as Google Search, YouTube, and Android to remain within the Google unit while longer-term projects could be reported separately. Alphabet’s major revenue source has continued to be online advertising, especially advertising connected with Google Search and YouTube.
Alphabet is frequently included among the world’s highest-market-capitalization companies. Its stock trades under the symbols GOOGL and GOOG, which have different voting rights. Both represent economic ownership in Alphabet, but the share classes are not identical in governance.
