Amazon owns AWS, the cloud-computing service, and is one of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization.
Amazon Web Services was launched in 2006 and grew from Amazon’s internal expertise in operating large-scale online systems. It provides computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics, machine learning, and other technology services to organizations around the world.
Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 and began as an online bookstore. It later expanded into broad e-commerce, logistics, digital media, consumer devices, and cloud computing. AWS became a major business segment rather than merely a supporting technology operation.
AWS is often confused with Amazon’s retail website because both use the Amazon name. AWS primarily sells infrastructure and software services to businesses, governments, and developers. Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are its major cloud-computing rivals.
