Which company owns Old Navy?

The story behind the answer

Gap Inc. owns Old Navy.

Old Navy is one of Gap Inc.’s major retail divisions, alongside brands such as Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta. Gap Inc. launched the chain in 1994 as a value-focused alternative to its flagship Gap stores, offering family clothing and accessories at lower prices.

Old Navy has operated under Gap Inc. since its creation. In 2019, Gap Inc. announced plans to separate Old Navy into an independent public company, but the proposed split was abandoned in January 2020. Old Navy therefore continued as part of Gap Inc.

The ownership question can be confusing because Old Navy has its own branding, stores, leadership structure, and merchandising strategy. Those features make it look like a standalone company, but its parent remains Gap Inc. Target Corporation is a competing retailer, while Adidas and Nike are separate sportswear companies.
