Which company owns Instagram and WhatsApp, two major platforms in its family of social-media products?

The story behind the answer

Meta Platforms owns Instagram and WhatsApp, two major platforms in its family of social-media products.

Meta Platforms was originally called Facebook, Inc. before changing its corporate name in 2021. The company was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes in 2004.

Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014. Instagram focuses primarily on photo and video sharing, while WhatsApp is a messaging service used for text, voice, video, and group communication. Both acquisitions substantially broadened the company's global reach.

Meta's principal revenue source has historically been digital advertising. It also invests in virtual and augmented reality through Reality Labs and has developed products such as Quest headsets. The corporate name Meta does not mean that Facebook disappeared: Facebook remains one of Meta's major products and brands.
