Which company owns Google and uses the stock ticker GOOGL for its Class A shares?

The story behind the answer

Alphabet owns Google and uses the stock ticker GOOGL for its Class A shares.

Alphabet Inc. became Google’s parent company in October 2015, when Google reorganized its businesses under a new holding-company structure. Alphabet’s Class A shares trade as GOOGL and carry one vote per share; its Class C shares trade as GOOG and generally carry no voting rights.

Google remains Alphabet’s largest and best-known business, with products including Search, YouTube, Android, and Google Cloud. Alphabet also places several other projects and companies within its “Other Bets” segment.

This structure can cause confusion in market-cap comparisons because GOOGL and GOOG are different share classes of the same parent company. A company’s market capitalization normally combines the value of all listed share classes.
