Which company owns Google and uses the stock ticker GOOG?

The story behind the answer

Alphabet is the parent company that owns Google and uses the stock ticker GOOG for one of its share classes.

Google reorganized under a new parent company called Alphabet in 2015. The restructuring placed Google’s core internet products, including Search, YouTube, and Android, inside Alphabet while separating several other businesses into distinct reporting units. Sundar Pichai became Google’s chief executive in 2015 and later became Alphabet’s CEO in 2019.

Alphabet has two widely traded share classes, GOOG and GOOGL. GOOG shares generally have no voting rights, while GOOGL shares carry voting rights. The different tickers can therefore have slightly different prices even though both represent economic ownership in Alphabet.

Alphabet is frequently listed among the world’s most valuable companies by market capitalization because advertising remains a major business and because investors also value cloud computing, software, hardware, and long-term research projects. Google remains the best-known operating brand, but Alphabet is the corporate name used for the parent company.
