Nvidia briefly became the world’s most valuable company after its shares surged during the 2024 AI boom.
In June 2024, Nvidia’s market capitalization briefly exceeded those of Microsoft and Apple. Investors were responding to extraordinary demand for Nvidia’s data-center GPUs, which are used by technology companies building generative-artificial-intelligence systems. The leadership changed repeatedly as share prices moved.
Nvidia’s position was built on more than hardware alone. Its CUDA programming ecosystem, networking products, and software tools made its platform difficult for customers to replace quickly. The company’s data-center business consequently became far more important than its original gaming business.
The ranking was temporary because market capitalization is a moving comparison, not a permanent title. A company can become number one without selling more products that day; a change in share prices alone can alter the ordering. Nvidia’s ten-for-one split later changed its per-share price but not the underlying value of shareholders’ holdings at the split.
