Alphabet owns Google and adopted its parent-company structure in 2015.
Google announced the creation of Alphabet in August 2015, and the restructuring took effect later that year. Alphabet became the holding company for Google and several other businesses, while Google retained its major internet products and advertising operations.
The new structure separated Google’s core activities from experimental or specialized projects, including research and technology ventures. Sundar Pichai became Google’s chief executive, while Larry Page became Alphabet’s CEO.
Alphabet became one of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization because of Google Search, YouTube, digital advertising, Android, and cloud services. The parent company’s stock trades under the symbols GOOG and GOOGL.
