Amazon owns AWS, the cloud platform launched by Amazon in 2006.
Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 and began as an online bookstore. It expanded into a broad retail marketplace, logistics network, digital entertainment business, devices operation, and cloud-services provider.
Amazon Web Services began by offering infrastructure services such as storage and computing capacity. AWS became a major part of Amazon’s business and is used by companies, governments, universities, and developers around the world.
Amazon’s stock-market value reflects expectations for all of these operations, not just online shopping. The company is sometimes confused with Alibaba because both operate major e-commerce platforms, but AWS belongs to Amazon and is headquartered within its corporate structure.
