Which company operates the Taobao and Tmall e-commerce platforms?
Answer
Alibaba Group
Answer
Alibaba Group
Alibaba Group operates the Taobao and Tmall e-commerce platforms.
Alibaba was founded by Jack Ma and 17 co-founders in Hangzhou, China, in 1999. Its first major service, Alibaba.com, connected businesses in wholesale commerce. The group later built Taobao as a consumer marketplace and Tmall as a platform for brands and retailers. These businesses helped make Alibaba one of China’s best-known internet companies and one of the world’s largest publicly traded firms by market capitalization.
Alibaba also operates logistics, cloud-computing, digital-media, and other businesses. Taobao is associated mainly with consumer-to-consumer and small-merchant commerce, while Tmall focuses more heavily on established brands selling to consumers. Alibaba is not the same company as JD.com or Pinduoduo, although all compete in Chinese e-commerce. The group’s shares have traded in both New York and Hong Kong, giving investors more than one major market through which to value the business.
