Which company operates the New York Stock Exchange after acquiring its parent, NYSE Euronext, in 2013?

The story behind the answer

Intercontinental Exchange operates the New York Stock Exchange after acquiring NYSE Euronext in 2013.

Intercontinental Exchange, commonly called ICE, was founded in 2000 as an electronic marketplace for energy commodities. It expanded through acquisitions into futures exchanges, clearing, data, fixed income, and equities. Buying NYSE Euronext gave ICE control of the New York Stock Exchange and other European market assets.

The New York Stock Exchange remains one of the world’s most recognizable securities exchanges, but it is not an independent public company separate from ICE. ICE itself is publicly traded and has become a major financial-infrastructure company.

Nasdaq operates a competing U.S. exchange and is a separate company. CME Group is another major exchange operator, best known for derivatives markets. These distinctions matter because exchange names, trading venues, and parent companies are often treated as if they were interchangeable.
