Microsoft operates LinkedIn after acquiring the professional-networking service in 2016.
Microsoft announced the acquisition of LinkedIn in June 2016 and completed it in December of that year. LinkedIn remained a distinct service and brand, while gaining access to Microsoft’s enterprise software ecosystem and global business relationships.
LinkedIn was founded in 2002 and launched publicly in May 2003. The platform allows members to maintain professional profiles, connect with colleagues, publish posts, recruit workers, advertise, and sell learning or sales tools. Its audience is centered on careers and organizations rather than general-purpose social sharing.
Microsoft’s purchase added a large professional network to a company already known for Windows, Office, Azure, and enterprise services. Microsoft reports LinkedIn as part of its broader business operations, so LinkedIn’s standalone market capitalization is not separately quoted. Microsoft’s overall valuation is measured through its publicly traded shares on Nasdaq.
