Which company manufactured the original PlayStation's CPU?

LSI Logic manufactured the original PlayStation’s CPU.

The chip was based on a MIPS R3000-compatible 32-bit RISC design and operated at 33.8688 MHz. Sony worked with LSI Logic to turn the processor design into a single custom chip suitable for a game console, rather than using a general-purpose off-the-shelf CPU unchanged.

The processor was closely tied to the PlayStation’s 3D ambitions. Its integrated Geometry Transformation Engine handled computationally demanding operations such as matrix calculations, coordinate transformations, lighting, and polygon geometry. A separate graphics processor then handled rasterisation, including drawing and shading the resulting polygons.

Sony was the PlayStation’s designer and brand owner, which is why “Sony” can seem plausible as an answer. However, Sony’s role did not mean it physically manufactured the main CPU. Toshiba was involved in other electronics and later PlayStation-related chips, but it was not the manufacturer identified for the original console’s main processor. LSI Logic’s manufacturing partnership was one part of the hardware strategy that helped Sony bring sophisticated 3D graphics to the 1994 console.
