Qualcomm makes the 5G modem and Snapdragon smartphone platforms.
Qualcomm was founded in 1985 by Irwin Jacobs, Andrew Viterbi, and several colleagues. It became especially influential in wireless communications through research, modem technology, and licensing of patents used in cellular standards.
Snapdragon is Qualcomm’s branded family of mobile platforms and processors. Qualcomm also develops modem technologies used in phones and other connected devices, including products supporting 5G networks.
The company’s business model combines semiconductor products with technology licensing. That distinction matters when comparing Qualcomm with chip designers and manufacturers: Qualcomm designs and sells chips, while it also receives licensing revenue from intellectual property. Its stock-market value can therefore reflect both hardware demand and expectations about future wireless connectivity.
