Apple launched the first commercially successful iPhone in 2007.
Steve Jobs introduced the original iPhone on January 9, 2007, and it went on sale in the United States on June 29 of that year. The device combined a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and an internet communicator in one product.
Its multitouch interface and software-focused design helped change expectations for smartphones. The original model used a 2G cellular connection and did not initially include the later App Store, which launched in 2008 with iPhone OS 2.0.
The iPhone became the foundation of Apple’s most important product business. Although Apple had sold computers and music players for decades, the iPhone’s scale, recurring upgrades, and related services played a major role in Apple’s market-cap growth.
