Tesla joined the trillion-dollar market-capitalization club in October 2021 as the first automaker to do so.
Tesla’s market value passed $1 trillion during trading on October 25, 2021, after the company received a large vehicle order from Hertz. The milestone made Tesla the first car manufacturer whose publicly traded equity was valued above $1 trillion.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and initially focused on electric sports cars before expanding into mass-market vehicles such as the Model 3 and Model Y. Investors also valued its battery technology, charging network, software capabilities, and expected future growth.
Market capitalization measures the value of a company’s shares, not the number of cars it sells or the physical value of its factories. Tesla’s valuation was therefore much higher than traditional measures such as annual vehicle production alone might suggest.
