Walmart is the world’s largest retailer by revenue and trades under the ticker WMT.
Walmart was founded by Sam Walton, who opened the first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962. The company built its business around discount retailing, high sales volumes, and efficient distribution.
Its operations include supercenters, discount stores, neighborhood markets, e-commerce, membership services, and international retail businesses. Walmart’s scale gives it substantial purchasing power with suppliers and a large logistics network.
Revenue and market capitalization measure different things. Revenue is the money a company generates from sales over a period, while market capitalization is the stock market’s value of its outstanding shares. Walmart can therefore lead retailers by revenue without always ranking first by market value.
