TSMC is the world’s largest dedicated semiconductor foundry and trades under the ticker TSM.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, usually called TSMC, manufactures chips designed by other companies rather than primarily selling chips under its own consumer brand. This contract-manufacturing model is known as a semiconductor foundry. TSMC produces advanced processors for customers in smartphones, computers, automobiles, and artificial intelligence.
The company was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its business model helped establish the modern division between chip designers and specialized manufacturers. TSMC’s technological lead and enormous production scale have made it a crucial company in the global semiconductor supply chain.
TSM is the New York Stock Exchange ticker for TSMC’s American depositary shares. Its home-market shares trade in Taiwan. A depositary share represents an ownership interest in a foreign company, so the U.S. ticker does not mean that TSMC is headquartered in the United States.
