Alphabet is the parent organization created when Google reorganized under a new corporate structure in 2015.
Google announced the Alphabet restructuring in August 2015, and Alphabet became the publicly traded parent company in October of that year. Google’s internet businesses, including search, advertising, YouTube, and Android, became the largest operating company within the new group.
Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive officer, while Google co-founder Sergey Brin became president. Sundar Pichai took over as Google CEO in 2015 and later became Alphabet’s CEO in 2019. The structure separated Google’s core businesses from projects such as life sciences and advanced technology initiatives.
Alphabet is sometimes incorrectly called Google in market-value comparisons. Google remains a subsidiary and brand, whereas Alphabet is the listed corporate parent whose shares trade under the symbols GOOGL and GOOG.
