Alphabet is the parent organization created in 2015 to oversee Google and its other businesses.
Google announced the Alphabet restructuring in August 2015, and the new corporate structure took effect later that year. Under it, Google became a subsidiary focused on internet products and services, while separate businesses could operate more independently under Alphabet.
The reorganization placed activities such as search, advertising, YouTube, and Android within Google, while projects including self-driving technology and life sciences could be managed outside the core internet business. Larry Page became Alphabet's chief executive, and Sundar Pichai became Google's CEO.
Alphabet is frequently included among the world's most valuable public companies because Google's advertising business, cloud services, YouTube, and other products generate substantial revenue. The name Google is still commonly used for the operating company, while Alphabet is the listed parent.
