Nvidia is the company represented by the stock ticker NVDA and is a major leader in artificial-intelligence chips.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. It became famous for graphics processing units, or GPUs, which were first widely associated with computer graphics and video games. GPUs can also perform many calculations in parallel, making them useful for machine learning.
Demand for data-center accelerators and related software helped Nvidia become one of the world’s most valuable public companies by market capitalization. Its CUDA platform gives developers tools for using Nvidia GPUs in scientific computing and artificial intelligence.
The company is sometimes confused with AMD because both design important graphics and computing processors. Nvidia generally designs chips and platforms rather than operating large manufacturing plants itself; much of its chip production is carried out by contract manufacturers such as TSMC.
