Which company introduced the first intermodal container service in the 1950s?

The story behind the answer

Sea-Land Service introduced the first intermodal container service in the 1950s.

The breakthrough was led by trucking entrepreneur Malcom McLean. On April 26, 1956, his converted tanker Ideal X carried 58 truck bodies from Port Newark, New Jersey, to Houston. The cargo stayed inside its container while moving between truck and ship, avoiding the slow, costly handling of individual packages.

The company was initially known as Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation; it later became Sea-Land Service. Its early coastal routes demonstrated that standardized containers could connect road and maritime transport efficiently. In 1957, Sea-Land began regular container-ship service, and in 1966 it opened a transatlantic route.

A common mix-up is crediting Sea-Land with inventing every form of container transport. Earlier experiments existed, including containerized rail and coastal services, but McLean’s operation is widely recognized as the decisive modern intermodal system. Matson Lines followed with important Pacific container service in 1958.
