Which company is the world's largest manufacturer of intermodal shipping containers?

The story behind the answer

China International Marine Containers (CIMC) is the world’s largest manufacturer of intermodal shipping containers. The Shenzhen-headquartered group has held global leadership in container production since 1996, when it overtook Hyundai and Jindo in dry-container output.

CIMC manufactures the standardized steel boxes used across ships, railways and trucks, allowing cargo to move between transport modes without being unloaded. Its product range includes standard dry containers, refrigerated containers, tank containers and other specialized equipment. That broad manufacturing base is why the company is associated with intermodal freight rather than with operating a shipping line.

The answer is sometimes confused with Maersk, MSC or COSCO. Those companies are major ocean carriers that transport containers and may own or lease equipment, but they are not the leading manufacturer of the boxes themselves. CIMC is an equipment maker, not primarily a container-shipping operator.

The company’s scale is substantial: its manufacturing network spans numerous production bases in China and serves shipping lines, leasing companies and logistics operators worldwide. Container output is commonly measured in TEUs, the capacity of a standard 20-foot container.
