What does the acronym '3PL' stand for in logistics?
Answer
Third-party logistics
Answer
Third-party logistics
The acronym “3PL” stands for third-party logistics.
A 3PL company performs logistics activities for another business instead of that business handling every operation internally. Services may include transportation, warehousing, order fulfillment, inventory handling, freight brokerage, and distribution.
The “third party” is the external logistics provider positioned between the shipper or seller and the operational work needed to move goods. A retailer, for example, might own its products and customer relationships while a 3PL stores inventory, picks orders, packs cartons, and arranges delivery.
The term is often confused with 4PL. A 4PL provider typically coordinates multiple logistics providers and manages a broader supply-chain process, while a 3PL usually performs or directly manages specific logistics functions. Outsourcing to a 3PL can reduce capital requirements and give a company access to established transport networks and warehouse expertise.
