Apple held the world’s highest market capitalization at the end of 2021.
Apple finished 2021 as the most valuable publicly traded company, with a market capitalization of roughly $2.9 trillion. Its shares benefited from strong investor interest in the iPhone, services, wearables, and the company’s large installed base of customers.
The end-of-year ranking is a snapshot, not a permanent title. Microsoft briefly overtook Apple during parts of 2021, and later rankings changed as interest rates, earnings forecasts, and technology-sector sentiment moved. Currency conversion can also affect comparisons between companies listed in different markets.
A company’s market cap should not be confused with its enterprise value. Enterprise value also considers debt and cash, while market cap measures the market value of common equity. For simple “most valuable company” rankings, market capitalization is the usual measure.
