Alphabet Inc. adopted its corporate name in 2015 after reorganizing Google’s businesses.
The restructuring separated Google’s core internet products from newer ventures such as life sciences, autonomous vehicles, and investment activities. Google became Alphabet’s largest subsidiary, while Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive and Sundar Pichai became Google’s CEO.
Alphabet’s principal businesses include Google Search, YouTube, Android, Google Cloud, and advertising services. The company is frequently listed among the world’s largest companies by market capitalization, although rankings change with share prices.
A common mix-up is treating Alphabet and Google as identical legal entities. Google remains the consumer-facing brand and principal subsidiary; Alphabet is the publicly traded parent company created through the 2015 restructuring.
