ASML developed the extreme ultraviolet, or EUV, lithography machines used to manufacture some of the world’s most advanced chips. ASML is headquartered in Veldhoven, Netherlands, and is the leading supplier of EUV lithography systems.
EUV lithography uses light with a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers to print extremely small features on semiconductor wafers. The technology required decades of research and cooperation among ASML, chipmakers, optics specialists, and research organizations.
A common mistake is to call ASML a chip manufacturer. It does not generally fabricate processors or memory for consumers. Instead, it makes highly specialized equipment purchased by semiconductor manufacturers such as TSMC, Samsung, and Intel.
ASML’s strategic importance has made it one of Europe’s most valuable listed companies. Its shares trade in Amsterdam under ASML, while its American depositary receipts trade in the United States under the same symbol.
