Which company developed the original Pokémon Red and Green games?

The story behind the answer

Game Freak developed the original Pokémon Red and Green games.

The pair launched in Japan for the Game Boy on February 27, 1996, beginning the Pokémon video-game series. They were created by Satoshi Tajiri, with Ken Sugimori handling much of the visual design and Junichi Masuda contributing programming, music, and sound. Nintendo published the games.

Red and Green were version pairs rather than completely different adventures. Each contained Pokémon unavailable in the other, encouraging players to connect two Game Boys with a Link Cable and trade creatures to complete the Pokédex. The games introduced the first 151 Pokémon and established the series’ core loop of catching, training, battling, and trading.

A common mix-up comes from international releases. Japan later received Pokémon Blue, whose revised code and artwork formed the basis for the overseas Pokémon Red and Blue versions. The original Japanese Green version was not released internationally under that name. Creatures, Inc. is closely tied to Pokémon’s ownership and later development, but Game Freak was the original game developer.
