SNK developed the Neo Geo arcade system and home console.
SNK introduced the Neo Geo Multi Video System, or MVS, in 1990. The arcade hardware could hold several game cartridges at once, allowing operators to switch between titles without replacing an entire board. SNK also released the Advanced Entertainment System, or AES, a home version with hardware closely related to the arcade platform.
The Neo Geo became known for powerful 2D graphics, large sprites, and faithful conversions of arcade fighting games. Its home cartridges were expensive because they were intended to match arcade performance, making the system a premium product rather than a mass-market rival to Nintendo or Sega.
SNK is sometimes confused with the Neo Geo brand itself. SNK was the Japanese company that developed and published the platform, while Neo Geo was the name used for the arcade and home hardware family. The company later became closely associated with series such as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and The King of Fighters.
