Which company developed the mobile game Pokémon Go?
Answer
Niantic
Answer
Niantic
Niantic developed the mobile game Pokémon Go.
Released in 2016 for iOS and Android, Pokémon Go is an augmented-reality and location-based game created and published by Niantic in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses a phone’s GPS, camera, maps, and motion data to place Pokémon, PokéStops, and Gyms in the player’s real-world surroundings.
The project grew from a 2014 April Fools’ collaboration called Google Maps: Pokémon Challenge. Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokémon Company admired Niantic’s earlier location-based game Ingress, and its map data and exploration model became a natural foundation for a Pokémon adaptation. Niantic used crowdsourced location information from Ingress to help build Pokémon Go’s early network of landmarks.
Players walk through real locations to find, catch, train, and battle Pokémon. The game launched with roughly 150 species, then expanded through updates to include later generations, trading, raids, research tasks, and team-based features. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company supplied the franchise partnership, while Game Freak contributed programming and creative talent, but Niantic is the canonical developer.
