Which company developed the Gran Turismo series?

The story behind the answer

Polyphony Digital developed the Gran Turismo series. The Japanese studio began as Polys Entertainment, an internal development group at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, before gaining greater independence and adopting the Polyphony Digital name in 1998.

The studio is led by series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, whose goal was to build a realistic driving simulator with licensed cars, detailed circuits, and convincing vehicle physics. The original Gran Turismo took about five years to develop and became a major commercial success for the first PlayStation.

A common mix-up is Sony Interactive Entertainment, which publishes the modern games and owns the PlayStation platform. Sony is the publisher and corporate parent, but Polyphony Digital is the specific development studio credited with creating the series. Codemasters and Electronic Arts have developed other racing franchises, including F1 and Need for Speed, but neither created Gran Turismo.
