Which company developed the Animus in the Assassin's Creed series?

The story behind the answer

Abstergo Industries developed the Animus in the Assassin's Creed series.

Abstergo is a powerful modern corporation secretly controlled by the Templar Order. Its research into genetic memory leads to the creation of the Animus, a machine that lets a user experience the memories of ancestors encoded in their DNA.

In the first game, Abstergo forces Desmond Miles to use the Animus so the company can search Altaïr's memories for information about an Apple of Eden. Later stories reveal that the device is also connected to Abstergo's commercial entertainment projects and its broader plan to control society.

The Assassins oppose Abstergo in the present day, although the corporation often presents itself publicly as a technology and pharmaceutical company. Abstergo should not be confused with the Animus itself: Abstergo is the organization, while the Animus is its memory-experiencing machine.
