Which company developed GoldenEye 007, the 1997 Nintendo 64 first-person shooter?

The story behind the answer

Rare developed GoldenEye 007, the 1997 Nintendo 64 first-person shooter based on the James Bond film.

Nintendo published the game, while Rare handled development in England. The project began as a rail shooter inspired by Virtua Cop, but its design evolved into a freely navigable first-person shooter. That change allowed players to explore objectives, use stealth, and approach missions in different ways.

GoldenEye 007 launched in August 1997, nearly two years after the film. Its split-screen multiplayer mode became one of the Nintendo 64’s defining features, supporting up to four players and helping popularize console first-person shooters.

The game is sometimes confused with later Bond titles developed by other studios. Electronic Arts published several subsequent James Bond games, while Activision later held the license for titles such as 007: Quantum of Solace. GoldenEye 007 itself remains specifically associated with Rare and the Nintendo 64.
