Nvidia designs the GeForce graphics-processing units widely used for artificial intelligence.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. The company initially focused on graphics hardware for personal computers and became strongly associated with its GeForce brand of GPUs.
GPUs can perform many calculations in parallel, making them useful not only for rendering video-game graphics but also for scientific computing and machine-learning workloads. Nvidia developed CUDA, a software platform that lets developers use compatible GPUs for general-purpose computation.
The company’s chips and software became especially important during the expansion of generative artificial intelligence. GeForce is mainly a consumer graphics brand, while Nvidia also sells data-center products such as accelerator systems. AMD and Intel are major competitors, but Nvidia is the expected answer for the GeForce brand.
