Which company created the visual effects for the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day?

The story behind the answer

Industrial Light & Magic created the visual effects for the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The company combined computer-generated imagery, practical effects, miniatures, and optical compositing to portray the shape-shifting machine.

The T-1000 was played physically by Robert Patrick, but its liquid-metal transformations required effects work that could not be achieved through ordinary makeup alone. ILM’s digital imagery allowed the character to flow through openings, form weapons, and recover from damage.

The work became a landmark in computer-generated film effects. Terminator 2 won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 1992 ceremony, alongside three other technical Oscars.

Digital Domain, founded later by James Cameron and others, is sometimes incorrectly named in connection with the film. The principal effects company for the T-1000 was ILM.
