Tesla created the electric-car Model 3 and Model Y.
Tesla is an American electric-vehicle and clean-energy company headquartered in Austin, Texas. Its Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover became its highest-volume vehicles and helped move battery-electric cars into the mainstream market.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with Elon Musk joining soon afterward as an early investor and chairman. The company first gained broad attention with the Roadster, which used lithium-ion battery cells and entered production in 2008.
Tesla also develops energy-storage products, solar-energy systems, charging equipment, and automotive software. A frequent mix-up is assuming the Model Y is a sedan; it is a compact crossover SUV derived from the Model 3 platform. Tesla’s market value has often reflected expectations about future software, autonomy, and energy businesses as well as vehicle sales.
