Which company created the computer-generated dinosaur effects for Jurassic Park?

The story behind the answer

Industrial Light & Magic created the computer-generated dinosaur effects for Jurassic Park.

Founded by George Lucas in 1975, Industrial Light & Magic, commonly called ILM, developed the digital dinosaur imagery used in the film. The visual-effects team combined CGI with full-size animatronic dinosaurs built by Stan Winston’s studio. This mixture allowed the production to use practical creatures for close interaction while using digital animation for movement and wide shots.

The film is especially associated with ILM’s work on the Tyrannosaurus and velociraptors. Phil Tippett initially worked on stop-motion dinosaur concepts, but the production shifted toward computer animation after tests showed that digital creatures could provide greater flexibility. Tippett remained involved as a dinosaur movement consultant.

A frequent mix-up is naming Weta Digital, which became famous for later effects work such as The Lord of the Rings. Weta did not create the original Jurassic Park dinosaur effects; ILM handled that pioneering work.
