Broadcom completed its $69 billion acquisition of VMware in November 2023.
The transaction combined Broadcom’s semiconductor business with VMware’s enterprise virtualization and cloud software. Broadcom announced the agreement in May 2022, and regulators in several jurisdictions reviewed the deal before completion. The acquisition was one of the largest technology takeovers ever announced.
VMware was founded in 1998 and became widely known for virtualization software, which allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical server. Broadcom had already expanded beyond chips through earlier software acquisitions, including CA Technologies and Symantec’s enterprise-security business.
The deal is sometimes confused with Broadcom’s proposed acquisition of Qualcomm, which was blocked by the United States government in 2018. Broadcom’s purchase of VMware did close, creating a company with significant positions in both connectivity hardware and enterprise software.
