Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms in October 2021 while remaining one of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization.
The name change was announced on October 28, 2021. The Facebook social network kept its name, but the parent company adopted Meta to emphasize its interest in the metaverse and broader digital platforms.
Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. These services give the company a large global user base and support its advertising business, which has historically generated most of its revenue.
The rebranding did not create a new public company or erase the company’s stock-market history. Meta continued trading on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol META after previously using FB. Market capitalization remained tied to the value of the publicly traded parent company.
