Meta Platforms changed its name from Facebook in 2021 while remaining one of the world’s largest technology companies by market value.
Facebook announced the corporate rebranding to Meta Platforms on October 28, 2021, and the company adopted the stock ticker META in 2022. The change emphasized the company’s investment in virtual and augmented reality, social platforms, and the metaverse.
The company still operates Facebook, but its portfolio also includes Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Meta’s market capitalization is separate from the value of any one app and changes daily with its share price. The rebranding did not mean that Facebook, the social network, disappeared; Facebook remains one of Meta’s principal products.
