Nvidia became the world’s largest company by market capitalization in June 2024 after its shares surged on demand for AI chips.
The company designs graphics processing units, or GPUs, that are widely used to train and run artificial-intelligence systems. Its CUDA software platform also helped make Nvidia hardware central to modern machine-learning development.
Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. It began with a focus on graphics for computer games, but its parallel-processing technology later became valuable for scientific computing and AI.
Market-cap rankings change whenever share prices move, so the identity of the largest listed company can change quickly. Nvidia’s rise reflected investor expectations about data-center growth, not ownership of the most physical assets.
